7. Establish Clear Emergency Procedures
A spill prevention and response plan should tell employees what to do without requiring them to improvise during an emergency. Define who is responsible for notifying supervisors, isolating areas, contacting emergency responders, coordinating cleanup, and documenting the incident.

8. Train Employees on Spill Response

9. Maintain & Restock Spill Supplies
Spill preparedness is an ongoing process. Inspect kits and containment equipment regularly to make sure supplies have not been used, damaged, contaminated, or removed. A partially depleted spill kit is not a prepared spill kit. Replace absorbents, gloves, bags, protective equipment, and other used supplies promptly after an incident or training exercise.
Keep an inventory of critical response materials and assign responsibility for inspections and replenishment. This prevents employees from discovering that an important piece of equipment is missing when they need it most.
10. Document & Learn from Every Spill
Every spill provides an opportunity to evaluate whether the facility’s prevention and response procedures worked as intended. Document what happened, what material was released, where it traveled, how employees responded, and what equipment was required.
Look for recurring causes. If a particular valve repeatedly leaks, the facility may need to repair or replace it.
