On-Site vs. Off-Site Environmental and Remediation Services

Environmental contamination remediation methods can be classified into two primary treatment methods: in situ or on-site remediation, and ex situ or off-site remediation. Let’s take a look at these two techniques:

  • In Situ Remediation – Remediation and treatment occurs at the contamination site without the need for excavation, pumping, or removal.
  • Ex Situ Remediation – Contaminated material is removed from the site and treated at an off-site facility or properly disposed of.

Excavation

If the soil or ground is contaminated with harmful chemicals, toxins, or other substances, excavation is necessary. All contaminated soil will be excavated from the site. It will then be transported to a facility that is licensed for proper disposal or treatment. While this method works for localized ground and soil contamination, it is very disruptive to the ecosystem as it requires excavation techniques. Bioremediation is another method of soil and ground remediation. This method relies on the use of microorganisms. Because this method only works on organic contamination, it is mostly used in agricultural industries. It is beneficial because it is eco-friendly, safe, relatively fast, and affordable.

Phytoremediation

Another method of decontamination for the soil and ground, phytoremediation uses biological agents, like plants, to detoxify the earth. The plants absorb and degrade organic contaminants and some types of metal toxins from the earth. They can then be removed and disposed of to prevent further contamination. This method can also be used for contaminated surface water, ponds, rivers, and lakes. In those cases, you would use aquatic plants. This is another flexible, simple, and cost-effective method that can be used when you want to avoid disrupting the surrounding ecosystem even further.

Soil Washing

Soil washing is an extensive process that uses water or chemical solutions that are designed to remove toxins, contaminants, pollutants, and other harmful substances from soil particles. This can be done on-site, or the soil can be excavated, washed off-site, and then returned. However, the process is complex and lengthy, and can be disruptive and expensive.

Soil Vapor Extraction

Thermal Treatment

Chemical Treatment

Chemicals are introduced into the ground to break down, immobilize, or stabilize harmful contaminants. The groundwater can then be reintroduced into the environment or disposed of safely.

Permeable Reactive Barriers

Permeable reactive barriers are underground walls that are installed to intercept contaminated groundwater before it reaches distribution facilities. These barriers contain filtration materials that remove or deactivate harmful substances as water passes through.

Pump and Treat

This method is used to remove contaminants from groundwater. If the groundwater supply has been contaminated with toxins, chemicals, or pollutants, it can be pumped out, treated on-site or removed to an off-site treatment facility, and then returned to the ground or discharged safely into waterways. This is a slow, complex process, however, and it can be very disruptive to the environment. It is also very expensive.

Solidification and Stabilization

This method is used for contaminated soil. Binders are introduced to the soil, immobilizing and binding contaminants to make them less harmful or volatile.

Monitored Natural Attenuation

This is the least disruptive method of remediation; however, it only works in select cases and environments. You would rely on natural processes to eliminate contaminants from the ground, soil, and water over time. This requires constant testing and monitoring to ensure safety and prevent health issues and damage to surrounding ecosystems and animal life.
